学术分享主题：Pay more for good dwellings? The amenity effect of urban destinations on migrants’ housing payment in China

       分享内容简介：This study investigates the effect of overall urban amenity on housing choices of migrants by introducing the “amenity effect” framework. By constructing an evaluation index for the urban amenity in 267 cities and using data from China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS) from 2011 to 2018, this study demonstrates that the urban amenity level in destination cities improves migrants’ housing expenditure but decreases migrants’ housing hierarchy. This study further examines three main mechanisms of the amenity effect on housing payment, i.e., expectation effect, accessibility effect, and attachment effect. The results suggest that the positive expectation and social attachment in local cities could promote migrants’ housing payment for urban amenities, whereas the entrance threshold into the local formal housing market could impede migrants’ dwelling consumption. These findings also indicate that the impact heterogeneity is reflected in background factors, including hukou, region, human capital, and other household characteristics. Furthermore, this study yields policy implications, including enhancing urban amenities to optimize dwelling conditions, mitigating housing access barriers for migrants, and focusing more on regional differentiation and vulnerable floating populations. It provides a new perspective on uncovering migrants’ housing choices and the effect gap in respect of urban amenity intensity on housing behavior.
